In my experiences, Girls usually excel in academics during Elementary and some levels in High School. But when it comes to University... Their Intellectual abilities seems to shrink.
The Truth is... this is a good step in removing the huge differences between men and women with respect to career growth.
My girlfriend is a Cobol Programmer and I'm happy that she's achieving something that I can't do.
And that's a culture that I can't see when I worked in Japan for several years.
